Why is it needed?

Although we regularly see young children using themselves well, by the time adulthood is reached it's usually a very different story. We spend long hours bent over desks, stuck in traffic, slumping in chairs, or hurrying around from one thing to another, and seem to have lost touch with those innate ability to rest and reset, to allow things to come back into balance. In the longer term, such misuse can have serious consequences for our health - creating an accumulation of stress, tension and physical distortion, and affecting our ability to function at anywhere near our best.

This can give rise to specific symptoms such as headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain, RSI type problems and concentration difficulties, or perhaps a more general sense of lacking energy and well-being. In order to have a clearer understanding of just what it is we are doing with ourselves, how to undo these patterns of misuse and instead direct ourselves in a manner which is appropriate to our needs, Alexander lessons can be of tremendous value.
